Sean Fischer, cello

UCLA Graduate

How did you choose your instrument?

I chose the cello in fourth grade (age 10). I was allowed to learn a string instrument for music class in my elementary school at that time. I had been playing piano since age 5, but I wanted to try something else, and I’ve loved the cello ever since.

What piece are you most excited to play this upcoming season?

I was most excited to play Mahler’s 5th Symphony. It’s a huge standard for the orchestral repertoire, and I had never played it prior to October’s concert, so it was an incredible experience to perform it first with AYS.

What have you learned from AYS so far and what are you hoping to gain from AYS in the future?

I’ve learned so much from AYS about being an artist and a musician; it’s hard to put a finger on only one or two things! It’s certainly been one of the most valuable musical experiences I’ve had at this point in my life, and I hope it continues to teach and inspire other young musicians for generations to come.
