How did you choose your instrument?
When I was 5 years old my parents took me to a music school in Russia and I had to go through clap tests and singing tests. I passed and I chose the piano but the piano professor at the conservatory said that my hands were too small and recommended that I would try the violin. I played the violin from age 5 until 19. I decided to switch to viola my 1st semester in college I fell in love with the sound.
What piece are you most excited to play this upcoming season?
I’m super excited to play Mahler 5. I love anything with a lot of brass and this symphony is one of my favorites even though I love everything by Mahler.
What have you learned from AYS so far and what are you hoping to gain from AYS in the future?
I have learned that music is very powerful and it keeps me focused. I work 40+ hours a week and I work full time. And sometimes I don’t have any days to relax. But every Saturday morning I get to come in and create gorgeous music with amazing musicians. That is truly a gift. I am excited to learn more repertoire and play a lot of new music. I know that AYS will train me for my future.
