Iona Batchelder, cello

University High School Iona-Batchelder-circle

How did you choose your instrument?

My parents listened to a lot of classical music when I was little. One of the recordings they played a lot in my childhood was Yo-Yo Ma’s recording of the six Bach cello suites. I listened to them a lot, and that inspired me to choose to play the cello.

What piece are you most excited to play this upcoming season?

Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto no. 2! It is my favorite piano concerto, and we are also playing it with one of my favorite pianists, Valentina Lisitsa. I’m also super excited to play one of my favorite Shostakovich symphonies, No. 5, in the same concert!

What have you learned from AYS so far and what are you hoping to gain from AYS in the future?

AYS is the first professional orchestra I’ve ever played in, and it’s such a great enriching experience to play such well known orchestral repertoire under the direction of an amazing conductor and along with so many talented college students from Colburn and USC.
