Carrie Rexroat, horn

USC for Masters in Music Carrie-Rexroat-Circle
University of Muchigan Bachelor of Music in Horn

How did you choose your instrument?

I chose my instrument mainly because of my mom. She had fallen in love with the french horn when she was younger, but never had the opportunity to learn it herself. So, she would play “Magic of the French Horn” for me and my brother while we were growing up in the hopes that one of us would fall in love with it too, and I definitely did! I actually have that CD framed!

What piece are you most excited to play this upcoming season?

I am super excited to player Mahler 5! I absolutely love that piece, and it has so many amazing horn parts. What could be better for our first concert? But I am also excited for the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony–that’s such a beautiful piece.

What have you learned from AYS so far and what are you hoping to gain from AYS in the future?

AYS has definitely provided me with the opportunity to work with some many great young musicians in the LA area, not just the ones studying at USC. I think it is really important to develop those relationships, both in a professional and personal sense. Through the creation of those relationships, as well as playing some of the bigger orchestral repertoire pieces, it definitely aids in making for better and more enjoyable concerts. I’m only going into my second year in the symphony, but in regards to what the future has in store I’m just looking forward to meeting new people and playing amazing concerts with them!
