Annaliese Reed, viola

Bob Cole Conservatory at CSU Long Beach Annie-Reed-Circle

How did you choose your instrument?

I was a 3rd violinist in the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra when they advertised a need for more violists. I always looked up to the 2 violists who sat in front of me.  It was obvious they were having way more fun than the violinists. Within a year I picked up viola and moved up to first stand.

What piece are you most excited to play this upcoming season?

It is so hard to pick just one! I think I will have to say the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante. As both a violist and violinist, this piece is high on my favorites list. It was one of the first pieces I fell in love with and would listen to over and over. I think accompanying such accomplished soloists will give me more insight and knowledge of the score when I perform this piece as a soloist in the future.

What have you learned from AYS so far and what are you hoping to gain from AYS in the future?

I’ve learned to learn music fast! We prepare things so quickly, much like a professional symphony. I’m hoping this year to learn from the mastery of the soloists coming to play with our orchestra. Because of AYS, we have these exclusive opportunities I never thought I would get to have so early in my career.
