JOB SUMMARY: The Development Manager is responsible for the development, management, implementation, and evaluation of an overall fund-raising program consistent with AYS’s needs and goals. To that end, the Development Manager works with the Executive Director and manages support staff and volunteers in planning and executing all annual, sponsorship, and membership programs, as well as all fundraising events. The Development Manager is also responsible for supervising grant writing consultants and, once hired, the Programs & Development Intern on overseeing all grants from federal, state, and local government agencies that provide arts funding; and researching, applying, and compliance with private foundations and corporations that provide arts grants. The Development Manager will recommend fund-raising policies and procedures to the Executive Director and Board with the goal of building a year-round development program that demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fundraising

  1. Plan, manage, and implement all phases of the Annual Fund campaign; oversee the solicitation and acknowledgment process, maintenance of records, and establishment and disclosure within IRS guidelines of donor benefits; monitor progress and make adjustments as needed.
  2. Develop a comprehensive case statement for support of the AYS, based on long-range plan; update annually. Work with Board and Executive Director to develop and direct year-round program to cultivate new prospects and seek out new funding opportunities.
  3. Develop and implement a corporate sponsorship program; research and identify potential sponsors; prepare proposals and work with Board and Executive Director to identify matches between AYS’s program and each company’s interests.
  4. Oversee annual grant calendar and all grant applications for corporations, foundations, and government agencies that provide arts funding; research all grant possibilities and supervise or write reports and back-up materials to support each application, follow-up on pending application, and remain in compliance with all government, foundation and corporate partners.
  5. Work with Executive Director, event coordinator consultant, volunteers and Board members to plan all special fund-raising events and benefits; oversee the execution of each event.
  6. Oversee the development and production of all support materials used to support the AYS’s fund-raising events and campaigns.
  7. Develop an ongoing planned giving program; work with the Executive Director and Board to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects.
  8. Provide strategic guidance for leadership solicitations; meet with Board and volunteers to review strategies and track progress; attend committee meetings as needed.
  9. Support the Executive Director, Board and staff efforts to solicit in-kind contributions.
  10. Keep abreast of recent research on fund raising; maintain a collection of current fund-raising resource materials.
  11. Attend other civic and cultural events in the community; represent the AYS by speaking at public events as requested.
  12. In-person solicitation meetings with individual donors with and without the Executive Director and/or Board of Directors as necessary.

Budgeting and Planning

  1. Assist the Executive Director and Board in establishing appropriate goals for the Annual Fund and all other fundraising campaigns deemed necessary (sponsorship, memberships, events, planned giving, etc.) each year.
  2. Develop a plan for achieving those goals and establish a master calendar that outlines all fundraising events and campaigns; coordinate all activities with the AYS’s master calendar.
  3. Work closely with the Executive Director and other designated staff in long-range planning for the AYS; prepare budget projections as needed.

Board of Directors

  1. Report to the Board and Executive Committee on progress of all fund-raising events and campaigns, as well foundation, corporate, and government support; provide other reports and statements as requested.
  2. Develop Board and volunteer leadership through participation in Board committee meetings and ongoing donor cultivation efforts; participate in identifying and recruiting new leadership.
  3. Recommend fundraising policies and procedures to the Executive Director and Board with the goal of building a year-round development program that demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.

Administrative

  1. Oversee the maintenance of all donor files and records; develop and administer all donor benefits programs in accordance with IRS guidelines.
  2. Provide periodic progress reports on all campaigns; prepare listings and financial statements as needed by the Board and staff.
  3. Serve as part of the senior management team to assist the Executive Director in setting and implementing administrative and artistic policies established by the Board.
  4. Train, manage, and evaluate the performance of all development staff, consultants and volunteers.
  5. Maintain ongoing contact with contributors, corporate sponsors, and business and community leaders.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Skills & Abilities (Required technical/functional skills):

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of experience in fundraising and administration support in a non-profit
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office suite with proficiency in Excel and Word
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Knowledge of using a donor database system with an aptitude for learning new donation software quickly (Patron Manager a plus)
  • Highly organized with great written and verbal communication skills
  • Outgoing with excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working with people
  • Ability to multi-task and establish priorities amongst competing interests
  • Detail oriented and able to meet deadlines
  • Adobe Premiere Pro (video) and Adobe Audition (audio) experience a plus

Flexible schedule and ability to attend AYS-related concerts and events on evenings and weekends is necessary. Salary is commensurate with experience.
